Its’ not often we get to utter the words “Fer Servadou” but now is our chance.  The grape variety is rare nowadays but was once widely planted in the vineyards of France’s southwest.  It means “Iron Servadou” and refers to the reddish soil rich with iron oxide that is scattered throughout the southwest, and particularly in Marcillac.  Domaine Laurens is one of the premier producers in Marcillac, one of the last truly rustic, out-of-the -way wine regions of France.  The wines are rich, rustic and expertly made.  The winery also produces a range of ratafia which, if everybody begins clamoring for it, we will be happy to bring in.
